On his breakout 2009 mixtape, “The Warm Up,” J. Cole called himself the “LeBron James of the game” but at the NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend he proved otherwise.

The “Lights Please” rapper took part in last night’s dunk contest with fellow Fayettevillian, Dennis Smith Jr. Smith paid homage to the rapper by rocking Cole’s high school basketball jersey. Cole in contrast, wore a tie-dye hoodie.

As shown in the video above, Dennis Smith Jr., point guard for the New York Knicks, earned a perfect score of 50 – impressively lobbing the ball over Cole as he sat on a chair below. Not to be out-done, and perhaps reminiscing about his high-school glory days, J. Cole took possession of the ball and attempted to land a basket for himself.

Unfortunately, it seems Cole was not the LeBron of this game and the rapper bungled the shot, taking the miss in his stride.

Cole will be performing at today’s halftime show, alongside Meek Mill.
